The spill was caused by a collapsed cross mem ber that poured 11,250 gallons of sewage into Belvedere Swamp earlier this month. Wayne Bryant, an environmentalist with the state division of water quality in Washington County, said that the Greenville sewage system suffered a similar spill a few weeks prior. It took Greenville officials not a week, but a single day, to repair the damage, Bryant said.. “It only takes a few hours to (make such a) re pair,” Bryant noted. When asked what caused the week-long delay, Town Manager Anne Marie Knighton explained that in order to complete the repairs a large cast iron pipe was needed. The contractor hired for the job, she said, did not have the materials in stock. “We could have gone elsewhere to get the pipe, but because of the location we needed someone who could get in there, do the repair and get out — someone who knew what they were doing,” Knighton said. The cause of the spill was two rotten cross members that span Belvedere Swamp which col lapsed, dumping 60 feet of pipe into the water and discharging thousands of gallons of waste into the ecosystem. Wooden cross members such as the ones that failed should be inspected every six months, Bryant said. Knighton said that the pipes are inspected monthly. The pipe in question had in fact been visually inspected by Town employees the Tuesday prior to the failure and showed no indication of what was to come, Knighton said. Bryant is recommending a reexamination of the inspection process. “There should be no problem determining weak wood,” Bryant said. “We all see grandma’s porch and the weak boards on it and think, should I really step on that — it’s the same thing See SEWER, Page A2 > Chowan Hospital has prominent role in community BY REBECCA BUNCH Editor Chowan Hospital is the largest employer in our com munity, providing jobs for close to 500 people.
